  10. Q 1:  What is a NEXUS?
  11.  
  12. A:  The dictionary defines a "nexus" as a "a connection, tie, or link between
  13. individuals of a group, members of a series, etc."  When applied to virtual
  14. cultures and the networked humans which comprise them, a NEXUS is basically a
  15. domicile/workspace/cultural-center formed in real-life by people who have met
  16. and established relationships over the Net.  They purchase and secure group
  17. Internet access, and thus control their own node; the site of their
  18. work/life/community-center itself, called a Point of Presence [PoP], can take
  19. as many forms as there are people to network architectural and
  20. auto-organizational ideas.  Living in close proximity, this intentional
  21. community can re-inforce its own work and the work of others in the NEXUS
  22. community.  Creativity blossoms in people when surrounded by creativity.  We
  23. have seen this happen on the Net; the NEXUS community intends to manifest this
  24. in reality, to integrate it into our respective lifestyles.

  27. Q 2:  How can this work?

  29. A:  A group of people organized in a NEXUS can share access, and thus keep the
  30. cost to its members low.  A NEXUS can also provide accessible and competively
  31. positioned Net-related services to its community; the money earned can be
  32. placed back into developing and sustaining the NEXUS itself and the NEXUS
  33. community at large.

  36. Q 3:  That's all you have to say?

  38. A:  No.  We have worked out various organizational specifics; but this mini-FAQ
  39. is simply a spark.  You should know by now whether you're interested or not,
  40. and whether you want to Do It Yourself or with us.

  42. Those interested in working further on this project from within an existent
  43. community setting can do so by sending a message to <listserv@netcom.com> with
  44. "subscribe NEXUS-GAIA" in the body.  This will add you to our realtime e.mail
  45. list.

  47. You can get the two larger and expanded FAQs -- the COMMUNItek and the
  48. communiTEK FAQs, focussing on those two complementary approaches -- by WWW at

  50. io.com:/pub/usr/torin/nexus/Info/nexus-[12].faq.  The [12] notation just means
  51. you can put 1 or 2 in there, no brackets.  You can also ask
  52. rez@sunshine.eden.com for a copy by mail if you'd like.

  54. Feel free to distribute this mini.FAQ to any /individuals/ you know would be
  55. interested, but please do not forward this to whole forums.  The success of the
  56. idea, we feel, depends on keeping as close a sense of community as possible.
